The Magna Carta
This document was forcefully signed by a group of barons seeking protection against the heavy handed and arbitrary acts by the King. the Magna Carta gaurantees trial by jury(due process of law). -
The Petition of Rights
This petition limits the King's power in several ways. The King can no longer directly punish any person, may noy impose martial law or military rule in times of peace, and may not require owners to shelter troops unwillingly. -
Bill of Rights
This document prohibited a standing army in peacetime, except with consent of pariliament, and all parliamentary auctions be free. It also granted the right to fair trial. -
The Albany Plan of Union
This is what Benjamin Franklin offered to solve problems of colonial trade. Where an elected congress of delegates from each of the 13 Colonies. Also enacted was the power to raise military, regulate trade between NAtive Americans and collect tax from trade. -
The Boston Massacre
This was an incident in which british soldiers killed five civilian men and injured six others. -
First Continental Congress
A delegate from every colony except Georgia met in Philadelphia(including Sam Adams, John Adams, Rogersherman, Stephen Hopkins, John Dickinson, and Joseph Galloway). -
Second Continental Congress
Many representatives(including Benjamin Franklin and John Hancock) meet in Philadelphia. The revolution has begun and the British government continues to refuse compromise. -
The Declaration of Independence
Congress named a committee of five to prepare a proclamation of Independence. On a doubt of Richard Henry Lee's proposal to congress. -
Articles of Confederation
This Confederation established a firm league of friendship amoung the States after the Richard Henry Lee's resolution that led to the declaration of Independence. Congress debated it was necessary. -
Shay's Rebellion
This was an uprising in western Massachuchusetts. This rose up becuase of financial difficulties brought out by fiscally harsh government policies instituted in 1785 to solve the state's debt problems. -
Virginia Plan
The plan was a proposal at the Constitutional Convention, to motion for a bicameral legislative branch.
