Naledi's House is Numbered
The government has ordered that numbers be painted on the houses of black families so that their removal from the village in four weeks "can be done in a proper, orderly way" (pg 6). -
Unexpected Kgotla
After Naledi and Dineo go to the farm where Nono works to tell her about the painted houses, an unexpected kgotla is held in the church. Chief Sekete tells the villagers that the government wants all blacks to move back to their "homelands." Most of the villagers are outraged, especially Mma Tshadi and Saul Dikobe. -
Taolo Inspires Classmates
During the middle of the school day, Taolo shares his opinion on the white rulers of South Africa. He asks, "Why shouldn't we be free to make our homes wherever we choose, live with whomever we want?" (pgs 44-45) Naledi is so moved by his words that she speaks her mind to the headmaster. -
In Mr. Molaba's Office
Taolo and Naledi are in deep trouble, and Mr. Molaba is furious with them. Taolo is expelled from Boomdal school, while Naledi is forced to bend down over a chair, and is painfully struck with a bendy cane of Mr. Molaba's, TEN TIMES! Nobody is happy, exept for Mr. Molaba. -
Chief's house in flames
In the middle of the night somebody burns down Chief Sekete's old house. When the police come to investigate, they force David Sadire out of his house and into the church with rifles. -
Slips of Paper
Mr. Molaba left to change his tire and when he leaves, Rev Redebe told everyone to write the qualities they thought were most important for a human being. When they got the slips of paper, they weren't blank but asked each person to list five names of students to represent them in their struggle against removal. -
Naledi's Uprising
In this chapter, Naledi is elected to be one of the protest leaders. The members have a meeting at Dan's house and agree to lead a large march against their removal. Nono is slowly recovering from her illness and is beginning to figure out what Naledi is up to after school. -
Marching
Naledi and the other students started a protest against their removal to the homeland.They passed the primary school and laundry store yelling their chant.All the sudden the police came in big vans.They beat people up and arrested people.Tiro was lost. -
Found and Hidden
Tiro is taken to the hospital where Mma Dikobe sees him and treats him before the police find him. She sends him home with a teacher who hides him in a closet in the school. Dan and Zach are both hiding and no one knows where they are. A note is slipped under the door saying they were safe. -
Hide from the police
Naledi came to Mma Dikobe's house to get some bandages and to talk but ened up hiding from the police. Taolo and Saul Dikobe are back in town. Taolo told Naledi all about his vist in jail. -
Whites Break Their Church
Naledi goes to church without Nono where she sees Rev Redebe. Naledi, Taolo and Mma Dikobes go to ask if Rra Dikobe can represent them.When they get back, the church is just a pile of rubble. -
South Africa Shall Overcome
The return of Saul Dikobe brought some confidence to the villagers. Naledi and Nono went to get their pension checks. The police come to check it out. Naledi spoke out to defend her grandmother. -
Rra Dikobe Is killed
Rra Dikobe showed up to the prayer meeting. Mma Dikobe told him to leave for his own safety, but he refused. Even though Saul was under a banning order, he started to speak to everyone. In the distance the villagers saw the headlights of a police car. A police yelled Saul Dikobe's name and then they heard a gun shot. Saul was dead. -
THE MOVE
Nalida wakes up with the sound of white policemen telling everyone to get up, pack thair belongings, and put them out side. Black men come out of a truck all wearing overalls. Each one gets a job. One gets the bulldozer while ome load the belongings into a truck. The man in the bulldozer was hesitent about breaking down a house with a man inside. -
Place of Stones
The villagers "homes" are small, metal boxes make of corrugated iron and they are so close together they could hear their neighbors whisper. The surrounding parched land is not suitable for farming or raising animals. Naledi receives a letter from her mother who will come visit them when she is allowed to leave Jo'burg. -
Chain of Fire
