Magna Carta
During the American Revolution, the Magna Carta served to inspire and justify action. It also was written to protect the peoples rights and property against the king. -
Petition of Right
The Petition of Right is a constitutional document that sets out specific liberties that the king is porhibited from infringing. This also included restrictions on non Parliamentary taxation, forced billeting of soldiers, and restricts the use of martial law. -
English Bill of Rights
It lays down rules such as limiting the power of sorveign and sets out the rights of the Parliament. It is part of the Constitution along with the Magna Carta and Petition of Rights. -
Albany Plan of Union
The Albany Plan of Union was a plan to place the British North American colonies under a more centralized government. It was the first important plan to conceive of the colonies as a collective whole united under one government. -
Boston Massacre
It was a street fight between a patriot mob and a squad of Britsh soldiers. The presence of British trroops in Boston was highly unwanted. This single fight led to the Revolutuonary War. -
Boston Tea Party
Boston officials refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain. The result of this was a group of colonist boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it in to the Boston Harbor. -
First Continental Congree
It was called in response to the Boston Tea Party, because the Intolerable Acts had punushed Boston for it. The convention was formed of delegates from twelve British North American colonies. -
Second Continental Congress
The group met after the battles of Lexington and Concord. They made many important decisions such as deciding to break away from Great Britain and decided to officially put the colonies in a state of defense. -
Declaration of Independence
The main purpose of the Declaration of Independence was to announce the separation from the British Empire. It announced the 13 American colonies and regarded themselves as independent states. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was first apporoved for ratification in 1777, but didn't get ratified by all 12 states until 1781. It established the US as a confederation of sovereign states and served as its first constitution. -
Shay's Rebellion
Shay's Rebellion was an unexpected armed uprise that took place in Massachusettes. One of the main reason it occured was because of financial difficulties. The Rebellion continued in to 1787 as well. -
Philadelphia Convention
The Convention was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to address problems governing the U.S. It lasted until September 17, 1787. The result of the convention was the Constitution. -
Virginia Plan
The Virginia Plan was a proposal by Virginia delegates for a bicameral legislative branch. It also descibes a a want for 2 houses, house of representatives and the senate. -
New Jersey Plan
The plan was made in response to the Virginia Plan. The New Jersey plan wanted to have one vote per state representation. It also called that The Articles of Confederation should be amended.
