Cell Timeline

  • experimented with glasses lenses

    experimented with glasses lenses
Zaccharias Janssen used the glasses lenses and placed the two lenses together inside a tube, this made the objects appear larger. This was one of the first steps towards inventing the microscope.
  • discovered cells

    discovered cells
Robert Hooke used a microscope to investigate a cork, which looked like honey comb. The cells were dead plant cells that had nothing inside of them. The small boxes in the cork were cellulars- which he changed to the word cells.
  • looked at pond water

    looked at pond water
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek looked at pond water and saw small living things that were moving through the microscope. He was the first person to observe and describe the living things through the microscope, as well as red blood cells and bacteria.
  • plant cells

    plant cells
Robert Brown discovered that plant cells were not empty boxes, they had nucleus inside. This took them 70 years to identify the other organelles.
  • new cells

    new cells
Karl Nageli observed the cells dividing to make new cells. This was the time scientists understood new cells came from existing cells.
  • all cells developed from existing cells

all cells developed from existing cells
Rudolf Virchow linked the observations of Nageli and brown, proposed all cells developed from existing cells.
  • the first electron microscope

    the first electron microscope
The German engineer designed the first electron microscope. It allowed them to see smaller things such as viruses which is even to small too see in a light microscope.
  • invisible agents

    invisible agents
It had been known since 1898 that 'invisible agents' said that diseases in plants and animals as viruses. However, before 1935, these agents were made visible by using the electron microscope for the first time.
  • new electron microscopes

    new electron microscopes
Since all their inventions, the magnification of electron microscopes has improved and are now capable of magnifying an object up to 1,000,000 times bigger.
