Robert Hooke
RObert Hooke discovered the cell and used it to describe the basic unit of life. He was observing a piece of cork and came across "room-like" cells. -
Leeuwenhoek
He discovered single-celled organisms using a micrsoscope to examine pond water. He called some tf the cells he found "anamalcules" but scientists started calling them microorganisms. He opened the door for microbiology. -
Dutrochet
He discovered the cellular process of osmosis and began research that would lead to the discovery of cellular respiration. -
Dujardin
He discovered that most microorganisms are single-celled. He sudied protazoans and invertabrates. -
Schleiden
WOrked under Muller and studied plant cells. HE saw that all plants are made of cells and consulted with Shwann. They combined their ideas and came to the conclusion that all living things are made of cells. -
Shwann
HE specialized in animal tissue. He discovered that animal cells had similar structures to the plant cells that Schleidin observed. He expanded on Schleidin's theory saying that all living things are made of cells -
Virchow
He discovered that if only one cell or a group of cells malfunctions, then the whole organism will get sick or die. Shwann made an error that new cells are created from blastene, all cells are made from other cells.
