Francesco Redi
Fransesco Redi challenged the theory of abiogenesis by constructing an experiment using raw meat in jars. Some jars were covered in gauze, some were sealed completely and the rest were open to air. This way he could control the entry of the flies. At the end of the experiment it was evident that maggots only appeared in the jars that were open to air because the flies were able to enter and lay their eggs in the meat. -
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Anton van Leeuwenhoek improved the magnification of a microscope by polishing the lenses. -
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first to discover single celled organisms. The shape of the cells reminded him of animals therefore he referred to them as 'animacules'. -
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Anton van Leeuweenhoek discovered bacteria by studying a sample of his own saliva. -
John Needham
John Needham boiled chicken broth expecting it to kill of any microorganisms yet they still appeared. He suggested there must have been a 'life force' that produced spontanious generation. -
Robert Brown
Robert brown discovered the nucleus in a cell. -
Felix Dujarden
Felix Dujarden proposed that many living organisms are composed of a single cell. -
Matthias Schleiden
Matthias Schleiden discovered that all plants are made of cells. -
Theodor Schwaan
Theodor Schwaan discovered that all animals are made of cells. -
Rudolf Virchow
Rudolf Virchow confirmed the theory of boigenesis. The theory states that all cells come from pre existing cells.
