Hooke cork cells

Cell Theory Timeline

  • Period: to

    Years

  • Hooke

    Hooke
Hooke viewed a small slice of cork through a microscope and discovered empty spaces. He then coined the term "cell" to describe them.
  • Leeuwenhoek

    Leeuwenhoek
Though prior to this event microscopes existed, they were quite primitive. Leeuwenhoek managed to change the magnification power to 270x. Using this microscope he discovered single cell organisms This led to the creation of the field of microbiology. By creating a stronger microscope this led to even more discoveries relating to the cell
  • Dutrochet

    Dutrochet
Credited for discovering the process of osmosis. He is the reason that a major tenent of the Cell Theory is that cells come from other cells.
  • Dujardian

    Dujardian
By atudying several different organisms under a microscope, he discovered that there were certain organisms comprised of only one cell. He called these single celled organisms Rhizopodas, which were later renamed protozoas. He also discovered that cells were organized, and were made of internal substance.
  • Schleidan

    Schleidan
By studying plants microscopically, Schieldan concluded that plant tissues are made of cells. He also studied the role of the nucleus in mitosis, though it was later disproven
  • Schwann

    Schwann
Inspired by Schleiden's discoveries relating to plant cells, Schwann discovered that all animal tissue is made of cells by conducting similar research to Schleiden's. This was also a major discovery as it made clear that both animals and plants were made of cells. This solidifed the fact that all organisms were made up of cells. He also believed that disease cells were made from blasterma, which would be later disproven.
  • Virchow

    Virchow
Virchow was a very dignified man in the biology field. At the time it was a popular belief (due to an incorrect statement by Schwann) that cells were made from other cells. Virchow, a pathologist, came out and said that all cells were made from other cells. This became an important aspect of the Cell theory.
