Hooke 1663-1665
Hooke discoverd the cell, by exmaning very thin slices of cork and saw multittudes of tiny pores; no form of nucleaus and other organelles. He didnt know the real structure or function. Hooke used the microscope to see the cells.

Leevwenhoek 1673
First to observe and describe single cell organisms; referred to them as animalcules (now called microrganisms). He was the first to observe mucle fibers, bacteria spermatozoa, and blood flow in capillaries. He also started developing his own microscope after seeing Hookes.

Brown 1833
Brown discoverd the nucleus in plant cells. He was able to lable the cytoplasmic functions within a cell and could distinguish angiosperm and gymnosperms. Brown aslo used the microscope in a way that no one has used previously.

Schleiden 1838
Schleiden made his discovery by 1838. Schleiden discovered the plant cell. He knew the nucleus must somehow be connected with cell division. Schleidan was the first to recognize the importance of cells as fundamental units of life.

Schwann 1838-1839
In 1838 he stated that plant and animal tissues were composed of cells. In 1839 he stated that all tissues are made of cells, and laid the foundation for the cell theory. Schwann also discoverd the enzyme pepsin and worked on fermentation. He created the cell theory. -
Virchow 1855
Vircho stated that all cells resulted from the division of previous cell. He also introduced cell pathology, stating that diseases do not affect the entire organism, only a specific localized group of cells. This made it easier to diagnose and treat illlness.
