Robert Hooke
Improved(cont)- They used theories like the Spontaneous Generation theory, which is the supposed production of living organisms from nonliving matter, as inferred from the apparent appearance of life in some supposedly sterile environments, to describe what they thought made up life. -
Robert Hooke
Contribution- Robert Hooke discovered the cell.
How-While observing thin pieces of cork, Hooke noticed small pores in the cork which he said looked like compartments in which monk would have lives thus the name cell. Hooke's model did not include the nucleus or the other organelles.
How it Improved- Before Hooke, people had no knowledge that there was anythings even close to a cell because of its microscopic size. They relied on theories and predictions to suffice what they believed made life. -
Leeuwenehoek
Improved(cont.)- Robert Hooke discovered the cell but he the cell was not alive because when he observed the cork it had no photoplasm in it. Before Leeuwenhoek, there was no actual time evidence of cells. Leeuwenhoek gave a real evidence of live cells -
Leeuwenhoek
Contribution- Leeuwenhoek was the first man to witness cells under a microscope. He discovered animalcule("little animals") which included what are now known as bacteria, protozoa, and rotifers.
How- Leeuwenhoek discovered the animalcules by observing pond water. Pond water is filled with many living microscopic organisms such as bacteria, that we know believe that Leeuwenhoek was describing.
Improved- Before Leeuwenhoek, there was Robert Hooke. Robert Hooke discovered the cell. -
Robert Browne
Contribution- Robert Browne discovered the cell nucleus.
How- While in Australia, Browne was observing 1700 plant species for his research. In his observations, Browne was observing the epidermis of a collection of orchids. In there orchids he found a dark, opaque center and used the term "areola". This spot had be observed by other scientist but it was disregarded because they majority of them though that the presence of this spot was insignificant to the function of the cell. -
Robert Browne
Improved- Though many scientists neglected the presence of the nucleus, the failed to know its real purpose. Being that Browne rejected there ideas, he opened up door for new research about the nucleus of the cell. He said that this dark, opaque spot was an essential part of the function of the entire cell. With this theory thus began research on the nucleus. -
Schleiden
Contribution- Concluded that the plant tissue are composed of cells and that cells are the basic building blocks of all plants.
How- While observing plants, he saw the organizational units of the plant tissue of cells. He also linked this observation to cell division.
Improved- Before the breakthrough that the cells composed every tissue of the structure of the plant, many had no idea that cells actually made up the plants structure. His discovery showed that the cell was the basic unit of life. -
Theodore Schwann
Contribution- Schwann was inspired by Schleiden to conclude that animals ,along with plants, are made of cells. He also concluded that they also do cell division to grow and develop.
How- Schwann observed animal cartilage and blood, in which he discovered red blood cells.
Improved- Schwann believed that life could be explained by physical and chemical law alone. Therefore, he did not believe that a supernatural force made all of life. He believed that the cell was the basic unit for life. -
Virchow
Contribution- Virchow discovered that the cells can only from the division of previous cells. He also believed that the cell was the basic unit of life for humans.
How- He was the first to discover that the cell theory applied to diseased tissue as well as healthy tissue. He also stated that diseased tissue also originated from the healthy tissue. He observed the effects diseases on the cells and cell tissue under a microscope. -
Virchow
Improved-Being that he discovered that diseased tissue originates in the cells of healthy cell tissue, now knowing where disease originates could allow for better advances in medicine to make the diseases not as scarce. Before many though that disease was a curse from doing bad things and the discovery of origination of disease would disprove there idea before.
