Robert Hooke
Hooke discovered empty spaces contained by walls and named them cells. He also approximated that the number of cells per cubic inch is equal to 1,259,7122,000 cells. He discovered the cell by looking at a thin slice of cork through a microscope at 50x. -
Leeuwenhoek
Discovered bacteria and single-celled organisms by looking at pond water through one of his magnificent microscopes. Leeuwenhoek did not really disprove the previous theory, but moreso added depth and detail to it. He was also the 1st to see living cells. -
Dutrochet
Discoved that cells were not just for structure, but was also physiological. Cells were important to the functions of a living organism. Detrochet's research process included poor-lensed microscoped and inadequate lighting. This disproved the previous theory by saying that cells were needed to live and carry out everyday bodily processes instead of just needing it for structure. -
Dujardin
Dujardin was the 1st to state that cells were not hollow, but instead were filled with a jellylike material in animal cells that is now known as protoplasm. He found this out by many studies of organisms under a microscope. His theory disproved that cells were hollow. -
Schwann
Discovered that animals were made of cells. He looked at animal tissue under a microscope. He helped make the original cell theory. -
Schleiden
Discovered that plant tissue was made out of cells. He looked at plant tissue under a microscope. He helped make one of the three tenets of the original cell theory -
Virchow
Virchow was doing experiments with diseases when he figured out that all cells come from other cells. He was the 3rd scientist to contribute to the 1st cell theory.
