Zacharias Jansenn
Zacharias Janesen invented the compound microscope and this allowed future scientist, Robert Hooke, to view cells under the microscope. Janesen involuntarily contributed to the Cell Theory -
Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke was technically the start of the “Cell Theory” since he was the actual first person to discover Cells. Hooke thought he was looking at plant cells from a cork but they were actually dead plant cells. Hooke’s discovery helped start the rejection of spontaneous generation. He named the discovery “Cell” because it reminded him of a tiny cell-like room. -
Antón Van Lueenhook
Scientist, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, built his own custom lenses for his microscope to observe a microorganism from a lake. He also looked at the stinger from Bees -
Karl Rudolphi
Karl Rudolphi conducted multiple experiments that proved that cells had their own cell walls and that cells were not connected and independent of each other -
Joseph Jackson Lister
Joseph Jackson Lister developed the achromatic lenses which got rid of the chromatic aberration. This helped scientist to see cells better. -
Robert Brown
Robert Brown discovered the nucleus in cells when he was observing a plant cell under a microscope. Brown frequently saw pollen moving in and out of the nucleus and deemed it an important part of the cell -
Matthias Schleiden
Matthias Schleiden noticed that all plants that he looked at under his microscope had cells. From noticing this he came to the conclusion that cells were a basic unit of life and that they are necessary for all living things. This is another great contribution to the Cell Theory because this is now one of the principles of the Cell Theory. -
Theodor Schwan
Theodor Schwan was very interested in Matthias Scheiden’s research so he decided to apply Matthias Schleiden’s theory to animals and Theodor Schwan looked at animal tissue under a microscope and found cells which further solidified the fact that cells were apart of all living things. This is another part of the cell theory. -
Louis Pasteur
Louis Pasteur created an experiment to show how cells can only be formed from previous cells. This also helped further the rejection of spontaneous generation. -
Rudolph Virchow
Rudolph Virchow supported the claim that cells can only come from other cells. This is the third statement in the Cell Theory. Him supporting this claim with extensive research helped to completely debunk spontaneous generation.
