Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke discovered the cell by studying a thin slice of cork under a microscope and discovering a lot of tiny pores that looked like the compartments that monks lived in, hence the name "cells". His model disproved the theory of Spontaneous Generation (all life arose abruptly from inanimate matter). -

Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Leeuwenhoek discovered living cells like bacteria and protozoa when he looked at pond water through a microscope. He disproved Hooke's theory because he realized that some cells are living organisms. -
Robert Brown
Brown discovered the nucleus of a plant cell when he was studying an orchid with a microscope. He found an opaque spot that other scientists deemed unimportant. His model improved the Leeuwenhoek cell because it added a nucleus to the cell of plants. -
Matthias Schleiden
Schleiden proposed that all plant tissues are composed of cells, and that cells are the basic building blocks of all plants. He made this discovery when he studied plant structure underneath a microscope. It changed how models of plant cells were made because plants now had cell structure. -
Theodor Schwann
Schwann discovered nuclei in the animal cell at dinner with Matthias Schleiden. The topic was about plant nuclei and animal cells when Schwann remembered seeing a similar structure to a plant nuclei in an animal cell. This discovery made a new model for the animal cells by adding a nucleus to the structure. -
Rudolph Virchow
Virchow proved that all cells come from pre-existing cells. He saw a cell divide into two cells underneath a microscope. This didn't disprove the model of the cell at the time but he did add the third and last part of the cell theory. -
