  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The MIssouri Compromise was an law that made Maine and Misouri new states in the U.S. It also divided the rest of the Louisiana Purcahse with the 36 parrallel, stating that North of the line could only be free states and south could only be slave states. It was a cause of the civil war because it divided the nation even more and set it up for disater when California decided it wouldn't allow slavery even though it was partially in the south.
  • Tarriff of Aboninations

    Tarriff of Aboninations
    The Tarriff of Abominations was a protective tarriff (for the northern economy to fourish) on imported goods especially from England. These tarriffs were renamed as the tarriffs of abomination by the southern states that were not benefited by the tarrifs. They disliked them because they made goods they needed more expensive. These tarriffs caused South Carolina to try to secced from the U.S and created tension between the north, south, and the federal government.
  • Nat Turner's rebellion

    Nat Turner's rebellion
    Nat Turner, a black man organized a slave rebellion that lasted two days. They killed around 50 white people. After the rebellion was stopped new laws passed that basically said that the few rights slaves had were gone and that free colored people also had little rights. This made the aboloitionists mad because the south was treating slaves even worse. It caused the north and the south to be even more split up.

    After the Tejanos and Americans in Texas won the revolution against Mexico, they wanted to be part of the U.S. In 1845 they became part of the U.S. This was a cause of the Civil war
  • Mexican American War

    Mexican American War
    James K. Polk wanted all of Mexico's California, a huge extent of land on the south west of the U.S today. He got Mexico to start the first battle. The U.S won the war. When California was formed and their constitution written they said that they would be a free state. This caused some problems because California was both north and south of the the 36 parrallel. It made the U.S realize that slavery was a big problem that had to fixed soon. It made the south mad because congress was unbalanced.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    There wasn't just one compromise, but five. The compromises were drafted by representatives of the north and the south. The first bill stated that Texas would settle it's debt with the government by giving up all lands below the 36 parralel 2. California accepted into the nation with it's borders. 3. New Mexico and Utah became slave states even though it's citizen didn't pracitce slavery. 4. Stronger fugitive slave act. 5. Slave trade was banned. These compromises created lots of dissagreement.

    "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Harriet Beacher Stowe
    Uncle Tom's cabin was a novel written by a Connecticut abolitionist in the 19th century that showed the world the treatment of slaves through the eyes of a fictional character called Uncle Tom. This book was one of the major factors of the of the Civil War because it uncovered to many americans the inhuman treatments that the slaves got. This book was a best seller and really influencial. It showed how the U.S was split in two by slavery. There was a lot of sectionalism.
  • Kansas-Nebraska act

    Kansas-Nebraska act
    Kansas and Nebraska were created as new states. With this came the repealing of the Missouri Compromise of 1820. These states would either become free of slave based on popular sovereignty. This caused many people to move there just to vote for the states to be free or slave. This greatened sectionalism and promoted it now that people were moving to these states just for them to allow or deny their believes and therefor tilt the congress mayority in their favor.

    When slavery supporters started moving to Kansas for it to become a slave state a group of people realized that another party should be created, now that the democrats shouldn't represent two different groups of people. The party was composed of whigs and democrats, and named the Republicans in 1854. They clearly stated that they were anti-slavery. This proved the sectionalism was a big problem that was led by slavery. It demonstrated how far people would go for their believes about slavery.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Was a series of violent political confrontaions between anti-slavery supporters and pro-slavery supporters in the border of Missouri and Kansas after the contreversial creation of Kansas. Theese confrontations lasted till 1861, when the civil war started. These confrontations were just one of many of the events that happened that demonstated there was a lot of sectionalism and that slavery was a growing problem that would not have a peaceful solution.
  • Dred Scott vs. Sanford

    Dred Scott vs. Sanford
    Dred Scott was an enslaved African American, bought by a doctor. As the doctor moved from different states, some of which were free. Scott sued his owner because it was illegal to own slaves in the free states. This case went to the supreme court where the judge ruled in the doctors favor because he said that the constituition said that no one could take a man's property. This contributed to the civil war the case showed everyone how slaves were considered property in all parts of the nation.

    Lincoln Douglas Debates
    Were a series of debates between Lincoln and Douglas in Illinois. The main topic of the debates was slavery. These dabates attracted big crowds. These debates would be a model that demonstrated what each of these presidential candidates thought about the biggest problem in the U.S at the time. This was a cuase of the civil war now that the president that was going to be elected would either try to keep slavery alive or end it which caused the other group to fight for their ideas.
  • John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry

    John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Harper and 20 other men wanted to start a slave revolt. They planned stealing the weapons from the navy's Haper's Ferry. His planned failed and he was stopped. This contributed to the civil war because it demonstrated that people were crazy about slavery and wanted to do everything in thier power to either free slaves or keep them enslaved. It was a growing tension between northern and southern states that erupted in 1861 with the civil war.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
    It was clear that Lincoln was against slavery. He easily won the elections because the democratic party had split in two. Before Lincoln's inaguration speech 8 states had secceded. 3 followed shortly. It is clear that Lincoln becoming President immedeeatly caused the 11 states to secced and the war was soon to start right after.
