    Missouri Compromise
    The Northerners wanted to add Missouri as a free state so that there were more free states than slave states. The Southerners wanted Missouri as a slave state so that there were slave states than free states. Missouri entered the Union as a slave state. Maine was seperated from Massachusetts and entered the Union as a free state. Congress drew a line at 36 30 across the remaining Louisiana Territory. Slavery was allowed South of this line and forbidden North of it.
