Causes of the Civil War (Events)

  • The Missouri Compromise

    This act made Missouri a slave state, and all new states north of the southern border of Missouri free states. It was made to preserve the balance between the slave and free states.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    A bill that would outlaw slavery in the new states that caused a lot of fighting in the Senate and the states.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    This act made California a free state, Utah and New Mexico territorial governments, abolition of the slave trade in DC, and amended the Fugitive Slave Act. It was made to settle the arguments between the North and South.
  • The Republican Party Formed

    Whigs, Democrats, Free-Soilers, and abolitionists united to form the Republican Party to support abolition.
  • The Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln became president which was a major cause of the Civil War.
  • The Attack of Fort Sumter

    This Confederate attack ultimately marked the start of the Civil War.
