  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Missouri Compromise of 1820
    The Missouri Compromise involved James K Polk and Henry Clay. Missouri was going to enter the union but there was one problem, adding it would upsest the slave and free state balance. Henry Clay decided to go to work abd create a compromise, and in the end Missouri entered as a slave state and Maine entered as a free state.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso included congress, James K Polk, and David Wilmot. The Wilmot Proviso was an attempt to negotiate a treaty with Mexico after the Mexican American war, Polk wanted a treaty to have peace with Mexico and he offered 2 Million dollars as well. Congress denied this and after multiple times it was still denied. The treaty was also to keep slavery from spreading into the new US territories acquired from the Mexican American war.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave act included United States and Congress, this law required that all escape slaves were, upon capture, to be returned to their owners. Officials in free states had to cooperate with this law. This law was created because slaves would runaway to the Nirth so they could be free. Abolitionist nicknamed this the bloodhound law because the dogs that were used to track runaway slaves were bloodhounds.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 involved Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas. The compromise prevented the further spread of slavery, it also strengthen the fugitive slave law. The Fugitive slave law compelled Northerners to seize and return escaped slaves to the south. The intention was to keep the North and South hostile.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    The Kansas Nevraska act included Congress and Stephen A Douglas. ThIs organized the remaining territory acquired in the Louisiana purchase so they could be admitted to the union as states. To keep the slave and free states balance the Kansas – Nebraska act was passed so that they could enter the union without conflict.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas involved the Kansas residents and John Brown. Bleeding Kansas was a very violent time during the settling of the Kansas territory. The Kansas – Nebraska act overturned the Missouri compromise's use of longitude and latitude. Residents had many complaints one of them including the issue that they should be able to choose if they want to enter the union as a free or slave state,this lead to violent behavior. An abolitionist John brown lead an anti-slavery fighting group.
  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott v.  Sandford
    A slave named Dred Scott moved to Illinois with his family by his slave owner. Since Illinois was a free state Dred believed he should be free, so he took the case to court and it eventually went to the Supreme Court. The case ruled as African American's weren't citizens so they couldn't sue in court. He didn't get his freedom for himself or his family.
  • Lincoln - Douglas Debates

    Lincoln - Douglas Debates
    People involved in the Lincoln – Douglas debates were Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln and Douglas had many debates around the state. They both wanted the seat in Senate, so Lincoln challenge him to a world of ideas and everyone came to watch. In the end neither of them won because the Democratic side won.
