3/5 Compromise
The 3/5 Compromise was added to the Constition to determine reeapesentation in the House of Representatives, slaves equaled 3/5 of a person. This shows sectionalism over slavery and the concern of which side has power in the government. -
Missouri Compromise
The missouri compromise balanced the free and slave states by keeping the number of free states and slave states equal. The issue was solved, by leveling out the slave states and the free states. -
The Mexican and American War
A war between the U.S. and Mexico spanned the period from spring 1846 to fall 1847.The United States actually had know intentions to start this war , In the end the Mexican government signes a treaty which in their means is surrendering . Also giving the US Upper California and New Mexico . In the end all this land became a major problem for the US. The north and south started agrureing about what states will become free and inslaved. -
Compromise of 1850
The U.S gained control of vast territory, which was a result of the mexican war. California petitioned Congress to enter the Union as a free state.. They created this compromise so that they can keep the nations united.This solved tempary issues but soon this compromoie will come to an end. -
Kansas and Nebraska Act
The people of nebraska and kansas have the decision whether or not they want slave’s in their new states border or not.The purpose of the act failed but was passed by congress. Ultimately Kansas was granted as a free state in January of 1861. -
Lincoln vs Douglas debate
The Lincoln vs. Douglas debate had a total of 7 debates. Both had strong agreements on how they would be peferct for president of the nation. Lincoln states one of his best quotes "A house divided could not stand."Meanng that the nation being split into pro-slaviest and ant-slaviest had to come to an end. Which leads into the civil war and abolistemet movement . -
Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address
As part of his taking of the oath of office for his first term as United States President this speach was given and was primarily addressed to the people of the South. In the speach he address how the union was broken and how the Confendacy which the south has created needs to come to an end. That the only way the govnments can stand stong is if the union is ultimately back togther . Ending in the fight of the civil war breaking out between union and states of Confederacy, -
Civil War
The civil war was faught from 1861 to 1865 between wheather or not the union will stand or Independce will be granted to the Confederacy. Many things lead up to the fall of the union including slavery was one of the biggest issues. In the end the states of Confederacy comes to an end after Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant . -
Lincoln and Emancipation
President Abraham Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which set a day to when black men and woman will be declared free from all slavery. This Proclamation actually changed the focus of the war from being all about preserving the union to aim now became to free all inslaved african american men , woman , and children. -
Gettysburg Address
President Abraham Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg to dedicate a speach to the soldiers who faught in the war that were now in the cemetery.Lincoln's speech puts the Civil War in perspective as a test of the success of the American Revolution. The nation found equal relations between the wars and started to think weather or not the nation itself should contiue to exist after all this chaos.
