3/5 Compromise
The 3/5 compromise was added to the constitution to determine representation in the House of Representatives, slaves equaled 3/5 of a person. This shows sectionalism over slavery and the concern of which side has power in the government. -
Missouri Compromise
The admission of Missouri into the Union; this was meant to balance the number of slave states and free states in the U.S. -
Annexation of Texas
The Republic of Texas was admiited into the Union as the 28th state. -
Mexican - American War
The war between the U.S. and the Mexico resulted in the defeat of Mexico, and moreover, half of their territory lost in the North. -
Compromise of 1850
Texas ceased land in the dispute, but was given $10 million to pay their debt to Mexico after the war. This compromise was the reslut of the rising tensions after slave and free states were being thrown off balance again. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Federal marshals or officers were responsible for arresting run-away slaves. The suspected slave had no say, and anyone aiding a run-away would be charged a large fine and many years in prosion. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
People in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska decided whether or not they wanted to allow slavery. This also became known as Popular Soveriegnty. -
Dred Scott vs Sandford
An Afircan American slaved (Dred Scott) was moved to a terriotry where slavery was forbidden. The U.S. Supreme Court decided not to give freedom to slaves, whether in free territories or slave territories. -
Lincoln's Inaugural Address
President Abraham Lincoln states that he has no desire to interfere with the slave-system of the States. He says he has no right to do so, and only wants to fix the situation regarding the North. -
The Abolitionist Movement
Abolitionists were people who opposed slavery, formal or informaal. The movement took place in the Americas and in Western Europe to stop African and Indian slave trade.
