Fugitive Slave Act
This act was started in 1763 but reformed and passed in 1850. In 1763 the bill was to capture runaway slaves and bring them back to their owners, but the new act was to give runaways the right to have a jury trail and protect the free blacks. -
Missouri Compromise of 1820
This was a compromise between pro-slavery and anti-slavery representatives. As Missouri became a state it wanted to be a slave state but many disagreed because it would make the states unbalanced, but Maine would later join to as a free state to balance everything out. -
Free Soil Party
The Free Soil Party was a group of males who were against slavery going west. This party only lasted until 1854. -
Compromise of 1850
This compromise had 5 bills as Texas gave up its claim to New Mexico. It all started when California wanted to enter the Union and be a free state but this didn't balance out free and non free states. This would later lead into the Fugitive Slave Act. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin started out as a few articles in the newspaper and was later published in 1852. The book talked about how badly slave owners treated their slaves, this enraged the southerners. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
This act repealed the Missouri act and split the of the whigs and free soil party. Also every state was allowed to choose if they were to be a free or slave state. -
Birth of Republican Party
This party started out with only 30 men who were all anti-slavery whigs. This party was originally known as the free soil party. -
Reapeal of Missouri Compromise
Reapealing the Missouri Compromise divided the counrty because Douglas wanted the northern plains to be open for settlements, but no slave owners could move their. When he noticed he didn't get any southern support he made his plan to allow slavery their. The democrats in congress won to pass the act in May of 1854. -
John Brown's Raid on Harpers
This was a raid on Brown and his men after he had overran the Harper's Ferry. Although the raid failed it made any compromise between the north and the south nearly impossible. -
Election of 1860
When Abraham Lincoln won at the election it started a lot of controversy, starting with South Carolina succeeding. This would later affect other southern states to leave the Union.
