    The Compromise of 1820 was created to establish the a way of guiding the expansion of slavery into the new western territory. Missouri's application as a slave state created a debate over the issue.Missouri became a slave state and Maine was a free state. This compromise created a line through the unincorporated western territories, dividing the north and south as free and slave.This event decreased tension by settling a disagreement between the two groups.
  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner created an uprise that created tensions upon many plantations in southern Virginia. Nat Turner and his 70 followers killed 60 white people. Nat Turner and followers were tied and executed for actions. After this rebellion Virginia lawmakers got rid of of the few civil rights slave and free black people had. This increased tensions, by increasing the barbarity of slavery in the south.

    The Compromise of 1850 were 5 bills passed by the United States congress. The Compromise prevented the expansion of slavery throughout territories and strengthened Fugitive Slave Act. This decreased tensions, by diffusing the hostilities between the north and south.

    John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown organized a small group of white allies and free blacks and raided a government arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. He wanted to seize the weapons and allot them to southern slaves in order to create slave uprisings. John Brown was able to collect the arsenal but was quickly forced to surrender them to soldiers. He was tried for treason. Southerners began to militarize in order to prepare for future raids. This increased tension between supporters of slavery and those against it.
