    The cotton gin was invented by a man named Eli Whitney. the cotton gin was used to extract the seeds from cotton so the cotton could be used for making clothing. The cotton was a big hit in the south because that was were all the cotton was grown. Because of the amount of plantations and slaves that were held there, cotton could be extracted and be made into cloth at a fast rate than before.

    Nat Turners rebellion
    Nat Turner was an enslaved African American who led a rebellion of slaves and free blacks in Southampton, Virginia. Nat Turner and his group killed 65 white slave owners by going from plantation to plantation until they were stopped and killed by local militia. Because of Nat Turner, all slave owners across South America caught news of his rebellion and treated their slaves with extra caution and more sever punishments.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was published by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book was written to help lay down ground work for the Civil War. Stowe was born in Connecticut and was a teacher at the Hartford Female Seminary and an active abolitionist before and during the Civil war. Uncle Toms Cabin was the best selling novel of the 19th century.

    Fort Sumter is fired upon
    Fort Sumter was fired apon at 2:30pm on April 13th. Confederate soldiers surrounded the fort and forced Major Robert Anderson(garrison commander) to surrender the fort and was than evacuated the next day. The fort was under Confederate control for four years until it was reclaimed by the Union on Feb 22, 1865 by Robert Anderson and Abner Doubleday.
