    Because of the passing of the tariff laws in 1828 and 1832 southern states like south Carolina felt like the tariffs were unfair and only supported and they only agreed with the north. When the federal government denied the south Carolina s argument. they had the right to go with the federal laws.

    After the Mexico war, congress had many heated debates as to when the new territories won from mexico would be admitted as a slave state or a free state. However Henry Clay helped make a compromise again between the north and the south. California at the end would be admitted as a free state

    Before Kansas was about to enter the union, there was going to be a election of an official state legislature so 5000 people from nearby pro slavery Missouri came and voted for the slavery and representatives in Kansas illegally. And as the result of the pro slavery, Kansas had a pro slavery legislature.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave who wanted to sue off his freedom. He kept arguing that because he was living in a free territory he should be living free. However the court declared that he was not free because of his residence in Illinois or in Wisconsin. They said that Dred Scott was a property of his owner and that he could not be taken without them having Due process of law. However at the end, Henry Clay came up with a compromise and he lowered tariff.

    John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. He wanted to capture the arsenal. At the armys base Virginia to arm the slaves. However his plan backfired and his men were captured and ten were killed. They decided that John Brown will be put to death.

    Abraham Lincoln won the election even though his statements that he would do nothing to abolish slavery in the south but the southerners don't trust him
