Causes of the Civil War

  • Slavery

    Slavery
    Slavery was one of the caues of the Civil War because, the north states did not want slavery. Although the northern states did not want it, the southern states did. They wanted the slaves to work on their plantations. This causes a disagreement between the two states and led to the Civil War.
  • The Underground Railroad

    The Underground railroad was a way of freeing slaves. The abolitionists made safe houses for the slaves to hide in. This was a cause of the war because it made the slave owners mad because they were losing money and property. There were even some times when if the lawmen caught runaway slaves, the abolitionists would attack and beat the lawmen.
  • MIssouri Compromise

    It was an effort by the U.S. Senate to keep the balance of power between the slave holding states and the free states. The slave holding states were worried that if they did not gain the slaves in the new states that they would become out numbered. With them being out numbered they feared they would lack the power to protect their interests, property and trade.

    The abolisitionist movement was an attempt to end slavery in the U.S. Over time, the abolitionists became more strident in their demands. The slave owners entrenched in response. This was fueling reginal divisiveness that led to the Civil War.

    Dred Scott was a slave who wanted American citizenship. To get his citizenship he went to the American legal system. His case became so big that it went to the supremem court. In the supreme court, it denied his request for citizenship. It also said that no person with African blood could become an American citizen.

    John Brown was a very strong abolitionist. He absolutely hated slavery. Infact, his hatred of slavery led him to seize the United States Arsenal at Harpers Ferry in October of 1859. Most people believe that his intention was to arm slaves for the rebellion.Brown was a role model for anyone who was looking to end slavery in America.

    It was a cause because of the federal or states rights of power in the nation.This was a problem because they could not determine wether or not the federal government had the right to abolish slavery in the states. This caused an argument between the nothern and southern states this causing the Civil War.
  • The Southern seccession

    It was started when the north had benefitted from a tarif. It made goods cost more for the south states. Jackson had vowed to send an army to the states to keep them in the union. Congress had authorized him to form such an army. It did not happen though, because of a compromise.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    The battle of Fort Sumter was the beginning of the Civil War. With the Confederates knowing that supplies were being shipped from the north to for Sumter, they demanded the surrender of the fort. On April 12, 1861, the Confederates open fired on the fort with cannons. At 2:30 pm the next day, Major Anderson surrendered.
