French and Indian war
After the French and Indian war the British became deeply in debt and demanded more revenue. With the defeat of the French The colonists became less dependent on protection from England. -

These taxes were imposed to make the colonial officials independent of the colonists and included duties on paper glass and tea. Smugglers increased there activities to avoid tax and more troops were sent in. -
