Treaty of Paris
This Trearty of Paris ended the French and Indian War, also known as the 7 Years War. The British were in severe debt because of the war and expected the colonists to pay for the debt. Salutary neglect was removed from the colonies. The colonists were also taxed without consent. This caused tension between Britain and its colonies. -
Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation Line of 1673 was the boundary set for the colonies by the British. It was put in place along the Appalachian Mountains to protect the Native American's land. The colonist could not live west of the Appalachian Mountains. This infuriated the colonists since they had just fought for the land. Britain could not stop them, so the line was ineffective. -
Stamp Act
British Parliament passed the Stamp Act to pay for protection along the Appalachian Mountains. The act taxed the colonists for every piece of printed paper used. The colonists were offended because Britain was raising money without any approval from the colonists. They rebelled against Britain even more. -
Declaratory Act
The Declaratory Act repealed the Stamp Act and changing of the Sugar Act. It also stated that Britain could rule America as they saw fit, just as they ruled Britain. The colonists celebrated the repeal of the Stamp Act, but still felt taxation without representation was unjust. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts taxed the colonists on imported goods such as glass, lead, paper, paint, and tea. The purpose of the taxes was to raise money to pay the governors and judges so they would remain loyal to Britain and enforce the law more in the colonies. The taxation continued to increase rebellion among the colonists since it was viewed as an abuse of power. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was a confrontation between colonists and British soldiers in Boston, Massachusetts. There was tension between the colonists and British due to the taxes put in place. The colonists formed a mob around the soldiers while harassing, threatening, and throwing objects at them. Eventually the soldiers fired into the crowd killing five and injuring six colonists. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act was the final act that sparked revolution in Boston. This act was designed to help the East India Company, which was already doing financially well. They had eightteen pounds of unsold tea. This company was promised a monopoly of the importation and the sale of tea in the British colonies -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a protest led by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts. The protestors dressed as Native Americans and dumped chests of tea into the Boston Harbor as a response to the Tea Act. The colonists believed the Tea Act was a violation to their rights. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were the name for the laws passed by the British to punish Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. It was officially called the Coercive Acts. The laws forced colonists to house British soldiers and closed the Boston Harbor. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The Battles of Lexington and Concord marked the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. British troops had arrived in Boston and were heading west toward the Patriot weapons stockpiled in Concord. The Patriot militia gathered to protect their rights and quickly defended themselves from the British soldiers. The British were defeated and retreated to Boston.
