Causes of the American Revolution

  • The Proclamation Line of 1763

    The Proclamation Line of 1763
    An imaginary line that prevented colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains to avoid conflict with the Native Americans. Even though colonists had just fought for that land.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    An act that taxed sugar, molasses and other products imported by colonists. It also required merchants to have a list of all the items they carried on their ships.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Colonists had to pay to have an official stamp put on paper items and all legal documents. This consisted of diplomas, wills, marriage licenses, news papers and playing cards.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    To save money the British required the colonists to quarter, or house British soilders and provide them with the supplies they need.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Charles Townshend passed this tax to pay for the troops supplies in America. This put taxes on glass, paper, paint, lead and tea. The colonists started to boycott this act and women started weaving their own cloth instead of buying it from the British.
  • Boston Masscare

    Boston Masscare
    The British sent 1,000 redcoats to restore order in Boston and soon they started taking the colonists jobs. This resulted in an argument with a colonist and a redcoat which then escalated into a fight with guns, rocks and clubs. 4 people died, including Crispus Attucks, and 6 were wounded.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The British wanted to prove they had the right to tax the colonies. The colonists could only buy the British tea with tax. This led to the Boston Tea Party
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Colonists dressed up as Mohwak Native Americans and boarded 3 ships. They threw it tea overboard and ended up destroying 342 chests of tea.
  • Committees of Correspondence

    Committees of Correspondence
    A communication network that spread news and plans to protest the British across the colonies through letters.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Effects that the British made in hopes of brining back order in the colonies and to punish the colonists. This consisted of the Boston Harbor being closed until Boston payed for the ruined tea and trials in Britain for British soilders.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    A meeting where delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies met to discuss what to do after the Intolerable Acts. Georgia didn't show up because they were having problems with the Native Americans and needed support from the British.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    The milita was alerted that the British were coming to confiscate weapons from them so they assembled and ended up defeating 700 trained redcoats. These battles kicked off the Revoultionary War.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    A meeting held after the battles of Lexington and Concord where they established the Continental Army and printed money to pay the army.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    A document written by Thomas Jefferson where the 13 colonies declared freedom from Great Britain.
