  • Invention of cotton gin

    Invention of cotton gin
    The cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney. Eli created this to speed up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber. Eli had invented this in hope of decreasing the amount of people that were being enslaved, but instead it created even more problems with slave owners wanting more slaves to harvest more cotton.

    Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was never underground nor a railroad. The name came from the activities that were done in secret and because it helped describe how it worked. It extended through 14 Northern states. It was used to aid in the escape of many enslaved blacks from their owners or plantations. The slaves were helped by many people that were against slavery.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Missouri wanted to be a part of the Union, but had requested to be a slave state. This would upset the balance between free states and slave states. To keep the peace, Congress created a two-part compromise that would grant Missouri's request but also keep Maine as a free state. This led to an addition of an amendment that drew an imaginary line across the former Louisiana Territory, created a boundary between free and slave states.

    This was an abolitionist newspaper founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp. William's purpose in creating this newspaper was to speak out about slavery and how it's bad. He was an abolitionist and wanted to support anti-slavery. He saw this as a way of moral persuasion and the only way to end slavery.

    It was a slave rebellion led by Nat Turner. It was the only effective and sustained rebellion. His rebellion spread terror throughout the South and set off a new wave of oppressive legislation prohibiting the education, movement, and assembly of slaves. This was done throughout the course of 48 hours.

    Wilmot Proviso
    It was designed to eliminate slavery within the land acquired as a result of the Mexican War. There would be a $2 million price as part of a bill in order to negotiate the terms of a treaty. Congressman David Wilmot proposed an amendment to be added to the bill. Controversy over slavery would grow and eventually lead to the formation of the Republican party.

    Lincoln and Douglas had seven debates between the two of them during the 1858 Illinois state election campaign. They argues over many things one of them being slavery and states. Douglas was seeking his third term in the U.S senate as a democrat and Lincoln was running for senate for his first time as a republican.

    Election of 1860 United States presidential election of 1860, held on Nov. 6, 1860, in which Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell. This election set the stage for the civil war. The division between the north and south were at the highest it had ever been and slavery question were really being asked.
