French and Indian war
The French and Indian war put Great Britain into debt and angered the colonists. Britain exspected the colonists to pay more taxes to pay off the war. They also were restricted from using or entering the land to the west of the colonies. Which was called the pproclamation of 1763. -
The Sugar Act
New prime minister,George Grenville,proposed the Sugar Act.When it put in effect,lowered the duty on foreign molasses.However,it assigned custom officers and created courts to collect the duties and send smugglers to jail. The act was suppose to encourage colonists to pay the tax. -
The Stamp Act
This act required colonists to pay a tax on all printed materials includings newpapers,books,court docuements,contracts and land deeds.This was the frist direct tax within the colonies. -
The Quartering Act
This act required colonists to provide housing and supplies for british soldiers stationed in the colonies after the French and Indian war. -
Townshed Acts
Great Britian still needed money to pay its debt, but the colonist wouldnt accept a direct tax. Charles Townshed thought that the colonist would accept indirect taxes on commerce. The act was called The Townshed Acts which levied new import duties on everyday items such as glass, paint, tea,paper, and lead. It was signed in 1767 -
The Boston Massacre
A group of colonists hurdled snowballs and threaten the lives of British troops.The soliders had fired into the crowd and killed 5 colonists. After the event,parliament had withdrawn troops from the colonies,and dropped the Townshed Acts.Paul Revere had engraved the event and used it as a propagranda. -
Boston Tea Party
Sick of paying the taxes on tea,a group of Patriots disguised as Mohawk Indians in Boston, Massachusetts,broke into one of the British Ships.The American colonists, armed with axes and hatchets, destroyed 340 crates of British tea,dumping the precious cargo into the Boston Harbor. -
Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were in addition to the ports being closed. They forced colonists to house British troops and allow british officails to be tried in britiain for crimes commited in the colonies. This resulted in violence in the colonies. They would force all courts of law to shut down and assault anyone who accepted and office under the govenor -
First Continental Congress
A meeting that included all delegates from every colony except Georgia that took place in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. An Virginian delegate,Patrick Henry, declared"Give me liberty or give me death!" Colonists had enforced boycotting all British imports to pressure Parliament into removing the Acts. -
The Battles of Lexington and Concord
The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War. They were fought on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Menotomy (present-day Arlington), and Cambridge, near Boston. The battles marked the outbreak of open armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and its thirteen colonies in the mainland of British North America.
