Charlemagne was very different from other emperors. He learned to read and attempted to learn to write, which was considered to be unnecessary by most emperors. He also tried to give as many people an education as he could by establishing schools.

Charlemagne was crowned Emperor of teh Romans on Christmas Day in 800 AD by Pope Leo III. This essentially took power away from the Byzantine Emperor, which increased the tensions between the west and east.
