    Karl Landsteiner demonstarted that different people have different blood types. Which are determined by marker molecules on their red blood cell. His discovery made blood tranfusions safe.
  • Blood Banks

    Charles Drew discovered that emergency transfusions could successfully be done with plasma if the whole body was not avalible. During WWII Drew established blood banks so that donated blood could help save lives on the battle field.
  • Blue Babies

    Helen Taussig discoverd a heart defect that turned the babies blue. The blood in these blue babies doesn't get enough oxygen which makes the babies seem to appear blue. Alfred Blalock discovered a treatment to cure the newborn babies.

    Christian Barnard performed the first transplant of a human heart. His work paved the way for future successes in transplanting hearts.
