Canadian's decline/progress

  • Sir Wilfrid Laurier

    Sir Wilfrid Laurier
    +1
Sir Wilfrid Laurier stood up for French Canadians, also best known for his compromises between English and French Canada. Which represent a period of progress as the French and English gets along. I gave it a +1 and not a +2 because of his actions towards Indigenous people and the immigration Act against the migration of British Indians. $
  • 22nd Battalion

    22nd Battalion
    +2
This is a period of progress because after the French-Canadian Regiment, the 22 Battalion, many French-Canadian soldiers could finally be promoted to higher ranks. %,$
  • National election

    National election
    +1
This is a period of progress because now women are allowed to vote in elections, however only certain women. Most coloured Canadian women were still unable to vote until the 1940s. %
  • Black Canadian Soldiers

    Black Canadian Soldiers
    +1
This is a period of progress because when Jones was recommended for a Distinguished Conduct Medal, he proven a black man's worth in a white man's army. However many black soldiers still faced discrimination which lead it to be a +1. $
  • Women on the Home Front

    Women on the Home Front
    -1
This is a period of decline because during WWI women were encouraged to enter the workforce and even though some gained financial independence and sense of social worth. Coloured women were still discriminated, many black women in Canadian cites worked in domestic service and their wages were a lot different compare to white women. $
  • Food shortage

    Food shortage
    -2
This is a period of decline because when the war created a food shortage, the government created a farm service crops program. They were the first to hire women for the 1917 season and more than 1,200 women offered their service. They worked long hours and got paid barely anything. Their wages were low depending on how many fruit they collected, most earned less than $6 per week and some had to pay $4 for lodging. #
  • Women enlisting in WWI

    Women enlisting in WWI
    +1
This is a period of progress because when the nurses who risked their lives working at the front helped changed the opinion of women as fragile, helpless creatures. This was not a +2 because women were still unable to enlist into the army as soldiers, sailors, or pilots in WWI. They had limited options in the military, mostly nurses, ambulance drivers, etc. $
  • Roaring 20s

    Roaring 20s
    +1
This is a period of progress because after the end of WWI many people were eager to enjoy life because of the new economic prosperity, technologies and social and cultural revolutions. However even though women were allowed to vote they were still discriminated, they were still struggling to earn a decent wage, or get decent jobs. #,$,%
  • Prairie farmers

    Prairie farmers
    -2
This is a period of decline because many Prairie farmers suffered from a collapse in the wheat market, which caused many of them to move to the city in hopes of finding a job. Due to the 15% of unemployment, it left many Canadians out of work in the early twenties. #
  • Chinese immigration Act

    Chinese immigration Act
    -1
This is a period of decline because immigration laws of Canada is discriminating against many other races but especially against Chinese people. They have to pay a $500 head tax to enter. Even after they enacted the Chinese immigration Act, Chinese citizen young or old, whether they were born in Canada or not has to register for an identification card. Which does nothing to benefit the people who resides in Canada. %
