In Sarajevo, Ferdinand the future King of Austria/Hungary was assassinated by a group from Serbia who wanted independence. This caused the Austrian/Hungarian Empire to declare war on Serbia.

Declaration of War: Canada enters WW1 Political,Economical and Social Impact
Germany entered neutral territory causing England to enter the war alongside France and Russia. Due to Canada being a Dominion of England, Robert Borden, Prime Minister of Canada declares war and campaigns for Canadian men to volunteer to fight. 32,000 soldiers volunteered from Canada to join the war.

April 24th, 1915- 1916 Battle of Ypres. 6,500 Canadian casualties, 2000 deaths. December 20, 1915-Newfoundland Regiment Failed. Many deaths. 1916- Battle at St. Eloi, Mount Sorrel and the Somme. Conscription becomes legal and all men aged 18-45 must enroll in the military.

Forcing men to enrol in the military causes division, anger and fear, however improves the status of some women. Some women are given the right to vote and others are not. Many women enter into the industrialized work force to fill the missing gaps from the men leaving. Without conscription women wouldn't have been able to prove themselves as equals, therefore this is progress for Canada.

At Halifax, a french ship crashes with a Belgian ship resulting in a large explosion killing more than 1,600 people and injuring 9,000. (canadianencyclopedia.ca)

This progressed Canada in the area of medicine and science and put Canada on the map. Many North Americans suffered from a disease called diabetes in 1921. This changed the treatment of diabetes and is recognized around the world.

The Famous Five Political/Social Impact
Five prominent Canadian suffragists advocated for women and children and asked the Supreme Court of Canada to answer the question "Does the word persons from the BNA Act include female persons?"
