Canada enters WWI+1
Germany invades neutral Belgium and declares war on Britain. Canada declares war on Germany to support the triple entente and because Canada was part of the British Empire at that time. This was a time of progress (+1) because it shows that Canada was a strong national force at the time even if we weren't a country. Canadians had a good reaction to Canada's decision to participate in war with over 32,000 volunteering for the military within the first three weeks. -
Battle of Vimy Ridge+2
All four Canadian divisions storm Vimy Ridge securing it, completing what the french and British failed to do. I gave this battle a (+2) because it laid the groundwork for Canada gaining its independence from Britain. As well as being a very prideful moment in Canadian history and a tribute to the strength of Canada. This battle obviously had a very positive from Canadians at home. -
The League of Indians+1
Founded by Frederick Loft this was an aboriginal political organization that focused on trying to improve the living conditions and rights of aboriginal people. The league of Indians wanted to work with the federal government but was dismissed by it's officials. I gave a (+1) because they did improve their conditions a little. Canadians didn't have a good reaction because there was still racism towards aboriginal people. -
The League of Nations+1
Canada proved itself in the war and was one of the founding members of the league of nations. Canada was very important in the role of winning the war and was now seen as a separate voice from Great Britain. League of Nations had a good reaction from canadians because Canada was seen as a separate voice from Britain while it was being founded. This is why I gave it (+1) canadians liked it and because Canada was a founding member. -
Agnes Campbell Macphail+2
Agnes was the first female elected to the house of commons as well as the first female Canadian delegate to the League of Nations. She was originally a school teacher and she entered politics to support farmers in her region. 1921 was the first year women could vote in national elections and she won. I gave her a (+2) because she was progressive for women advocating for women's rights and sponsored Ontario's first equal-pay legislation. This had a good reaction from canadians especially women. -
Discovery of Insulin+2
Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and John Macleod discovered a cure to diabetes through insulin saving many peoples lives. Insulin was tested on a 14 year old boy dying of diabetes. The first test failed so James Collip worked for days to purify the insulin for the second test and succeeded in curing the boy. I gave this (+2) because they saved the boys life and countless others then and now. Canadians had a great reaction to this as it saved many families and loved ones. -
Chanak Affairs+1
British Prime Minister David Lloyd George wants Canada's Army. Canada's Prime Minister must decide whether to send troops or not. I give this situation a (+1) because Canada's prime minister Mackenzie King handles it well. He doesn't help because Turkey isn't directly threatening the safety of Britain, Canadians had a positive reaction to this because the world is starting to realize that Canada wants to be seen as their own country making this situation a time of progress. -
The Department of National Defense+2
This was introduced for economy purposes and as the unification of the military, navy and air force. I gave this a (+2) because this was a time of progress for Canada because it had a positive affect on the economy and it organized all of Canada's military. This would improve the coordination of Canada's national security policy and overall benefit Canada. -
Pier 21+1
Pier 21 is built in Halifax as the former harbor front, Pier 2 was too small to accommodate all the new immigrants coming to Canada. I gave this a (+1) because it was needed and helpful in the future but shortly after it was built the great depression started and the amount of immigrants coming to Canada significantly dropped which didn't sit well with some canadians. -
The Famous Five+2
The Famous Five fought to make women recognized as persons. They originally asked Canada's supreme court if the word "Person" included woman and their answer was "No". They didn't give up though and went to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council of Great Britain in London and Lord Sankey said they should be persons.I gave this a (+2) because these women won the right for women to serve in the senate while also starting to gain women equality in all aspects of life which canadians loved.
