Assasination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand
During a parade, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a member of the Serbian nationalist group "The Black Hand". In the years leading up to World War I, tensions were high, war was imminent, and Europe could be described as a "powder keg." This event was "the spark."
