World War 2 Ends
When Germany surrenders in Europe the attention was turned to the Pacific. World War II finally ends wih the surrender of Japan after the atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. -
Creation of NATO
Nato, or North Altantic Treaty Organization, was created for mutal defense. Meaning if one of the countries were attacked, it would mean attacking the whole organization. Nato was created in 1949 and included Canada and the United States. -
Communist Take Control of China
Communist Leader Mao Jedong took over the government in China. The US didn't want to recognize this new government of China so still allowed the former government (Taiwan) to have a seat in the UN. Finally under pressure and Americans allowed Red China to replace the old Taiwan government. -
The Korean War
During the second world war, Korea was occupied by Japan. When Japan finally surrendered Korea was split between Communist North and Democratic South. In, 1950 over 100,000 North Korean troops invaded democratic south causing the US to summon the United Nations to to defend the south.
Canada was one of the 32 countries to fight in Korea. Canada sent over 26,500 troops to Korea and in total 1,000 wre wounded and 400 were killed.

Vietnam War
In 1954, Vietnam split into communist North led by Ho Chi Minh, and anti communist South. At first the war started only with North Vietnam and South Vietnam but the United States mission was to contain communism. America joined with the south to help fight the North and soon escalated to multiple communist countries fighting non-communist countries. By 1969 there were 543,000 Americans in south Vietnam. The war ended with the Americans leaving. Soon after Vietnam became fully communist. -
Creation of the WARSAW Pact
Was created in response to the creation of Nato in 1955. It was used as a defensifve allinace between the Soviets and other communism countries. -
The United Nations is created
50 countries led by Britian, Canada, the Soviet Union, and United States meet in San Francisco to creat the UN. Like the league of nations, the UN's main objectives were to keep peace, prevent new wars, encourage cooperation between nations, and promoting human rights by promoting equality and improving standards of living. -
The Suez Crisis and Lester Pearson
When the Egyptian Presidant Nasser took control of the Suez Canal, Britain and France joined Isreal to fight Egypt. Lester Pearson, Canada's Minister of External Affairs, came up with the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF). This was meant to keep the fighting at bay while the Suez Crisis was thought out. Because of this, the UN peacekeeping forces replaced the hostile combatants. Lester then recieved a nobel Peace Prize. -
Berlin Wall is Built
The Berlin wall was built by the Soviets and was used as the symbol of the cold war. This wall was built to separate West and East Berlin and to separate Communism and Democracy. The wall completely cut off East Berlin from the west. All supplies were also blockaded and the West flew supplies over the wall daily, called the Berlin Airlift. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
Throughout the War, USA and the Soviets stockpiled nuclear weapons in various countries around the world. The Soviets constructed a missle base in Cuba. When Americans heard, they sent ships to meet the Soviets fleets if the Soviets did attack. When the Soviet and American fleets came face to face, the world was close to ending but the Soviets turned around. The SOviet leader sent a letter stating he would remove the missles if they promised not to invade Cuba. -
USSR Invades Afghanistan
The USSR installed a new dictator named Babrak Karmal. Over 2,000 machines of war were placed in Afganistan.
When USSR gains control of Afghnistan, Canadian Peacekeepers were called upon to control the conflict. Even today with all of Canada's efforts, there is still very little change. -
Berlin Wall is Torn Down
While the Soviets were going through reform, its effect had spread to many countries. Revolts and speeches in East Germany were happening to have new open borders. Finally the wall was finally open and was torn down in 1989.
