Cambodia gets its independence from France after 90 years of their rule. -
U.S Helping Cambodia
In this time (1955-1963) the United States, helped build Cambodia back up, after the fight for Independance from France. The U.S provided $409.6 million in economic aid, and $83.7 million in military aid. -
Cambodia breaks relations with the U.S
Cambodia, in May of 1965, finally broke of relations with the United States, because earlier the relationship had started to fade. So, they finally ended their relationship with the U.S. -
U.S Bombing Plans.
Around this time (not the exact time.) The U.S started plans to bomb places in Cambodia where the Vietnam soldiers were staying. -

They are fighting against 2 different people, and are loosing a lot of territory. They are fighting against North Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge. -
Lon Nol
Lon Nol, who is a Prime Minister overthrows Sihanouk. Lon Nol, then proclaimed the Khmer Republic and sent the army to fight the Vietnamses in Cambodia. -
Pol Pot
Pol Pot takes over Cambodia, and it was a horrible horrible thing. "City Dwellers" were forced to work in farms, and were forced to move. Money became worthless, like in the "Great Depression", their small freedoms, were taken and made even smaller. And finally, relgion was banned. The country was in poverty, and the Khmer Rouge invent the phrase "year zero". Thousands of middle class people are killed, and around 1.7 million people died in the 3 years that Pol Pot controlled Cambodia. -
Fighting Breaks Out.
Fighting between Cambodia and Vietnam breaks out. Eventually, Vietnam took Phnom Penh. Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge forces run to Thailand. And many aspects of life before Khmer Rouge are restablished. This took place between 1977-1979 -
The People's Republic of Kampuchea
The People's Republic of Kampuchea was established when there was a lot of fighitng going on. Then, in 1981, The People's Republic of Kampuchea was made the government, and the people in the inner-city were mad about it. The old government, which includes the Khmer Rouge and Sihanouk, keeps its place in United Nations. -
Hun Sen
In 1985, Hun Sen becomes prime minister. Cambodia is filled with guerrilla warfare, and thousands of people become refugees. -
Getting to Peace and Freedom.
Vietnamese troops stop fighting, and Cambodia is finally re-named back to Cambodia. Hun Sen tries to attract allies, by getting rid of socialism. And Buddhism is made the countries main religion again. -
UN
Five permanent members of the UN, agree on a peace plan for Cambodia. -
Peace Treaty
In Paris, Cambodia and Vietnam signed a peace Treaty, to end the war they had been in. -
Prince Norodom Sihanouk
Prince Norodom Sihanouk returned home to Cambodia, after 13 years of exile. -
Kingdom of Cambodia
In 1993, Cambodia becomes a Monarchy again. Sihanouk becomes the king again. The government-in-exile- loses its place in the UN. -
Khmer Rouge
Khmer Rouge is outlawed in Cambodia. -
Khmer Rouge
The Khmer Rouge attack a government in Southwestern Cambodia, and they kidnap 60 people. -
Pol Pot
Pol pot, died in his jungle hideout. -
Khmer Rouge
The Khmer Rouge kills 22 vietnamese people. -
Hun Sen
Hun Sen becomes prime minister of Cambodia. Ranariddh is president of the national assembly. -
Khmer Rouge
A law, sets up genocide charges against the leaders of Khmer Rouge. -

In 2003, the Prime Minister's nephew was arrested and accused of killing 2 people.
