A carpenter named James Marshall discovered a few shiny particles lying near John Sutter's sawmill. Once confirmed that it was truly gold, news spread like lightning speed. When news reached San Francisco the whole town went to pan for gold. -
California is admitted into the Union as the 31st state.

Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act
This was passed by the congress and signed by President Chester A. Arthur. Very few Chinese people could enter the country under this act in 1882. They only allowed non-laborers. However, it was hard to prove you weren't a laborer. http://www.ourdocuments.gov/doc.php?flash=true&doc=47 -

Created to protest the annexation of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Anti-Imperialist League was the first national anti-imperialist organization formed in the United States.

Oil discovered along Kern River
Oil was found approximately three quarters of a mile east of Gordon’s Ferry. Using only hand tools, the driller found oil in the sand 43 feet into the ground. Shortly after, a commercial well was drilled and went into production. -
The San Francisco Earthquake
The quake lasted 28 seconds; fires burned for 4 days. An estimated 1,000 people died. Over 200,000 were left homeless. Fire swept through 5 square miles of the city. Property loss was estimated at $500,000,000. 28,000 buildings were destroyed.

Opening of Angel Island
From 1910-1940, Chinese immigrants were held at Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco Bay. U.S. officials hoped to deport as many as possible by asking questions about Chinese villages and family histories that immigrants would have trouble answering. Women won the right to vote!

Golden Gate Bridge Opened

United Nations Charter signed in San Francisco
The Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by the representatives of the 50 countries. Poland, which was not represented at the Conference, signed it later and became one of the original 51 member states.

Fort Point became a National Historic Site
The fort was built for the Civil War. However, it never saw battle. Fort Point was built between 1853 and 1861 by the U.S. Army Engineers as defense planned for the protection of San Francisco Bay. The fort would protect the Bay against foreign attack.
