This is the Brown family's first recorded involvement in the slave trading. The four brothers' father sent the Mary to Africa to capture slaves and bring them back. -
Brown Family's 2nd involvement
This is the next recorded involevement of the Brown family's slave trading. This is when Nicholas and John joined their uncle and many others in outfitting another slave ship. That vessel was the Wheel of Fortune that was later captured by the French. -
The Sally Left Newport for Africa
The Sally left Newport on September 10, 1764 and was heading for Africa. The ship was supposed to go to Africa, trade, make a profit, get a healthy cargo of slaves, go to Caribbean, sell the slaves, and return to Providence. -
Sally Arrived in West Africa
On this day, Captain Hopkins and the Sally arrived in West Africa.They landed on the coast of present-day Guinea. Hopkins traded with European merchants in the same area. -
Hopkins Bought Last Slave
On this day, Captain Hopkins bought his last slave. In all, Hopkins had purchased a total of 196 slaves. Nine of these slaves he sold to other traders on the coast, and 20 of the slaves died. -
Slaves Rose in Rebellion
On the eighth day out at sea, the slaves on the Sally rose in rebellion. Eight of the slaves that rebelled were killed and several others were wounded. The crew killed these slaves by firing on them when they were rising in rebellion. -
Brown Brothers to Hopkins
The Brown brothers said to Captain Hopkins on this day, "We need not mention how Disagreeable the news of your losing...88 slaves is to us and all your friends, but yourself continuing in health is a great satisfaction to us, that we remain cheerful..."
