Navigation Acts
The Navigation Acts were a series of laws passed by parliament that stated that Britain and Britain only had the rights to trade with the colonies. The colonies were providing lots of goods that Britain needed. This had it's ups and downs for the Americans. Imported goods cost money, but exported goods cost money. The navigation acts really were not enforced until the 1750's. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was a law passed by parliament that stated that the American colonists must be taxed on molasses. The colonists responded by boycotting lots of British goods. The British passed this law to make money to pay off their debts after the war. -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act, much like the Sugar Act, was another form of taxation upon the Colonists. This time, they were taxed on their playing cards, paper, and legal documents. This affected everyone, so it spread like wildfire through the colonies. The colonists were very upset. -
Declaratory Act
The Declaratory Act was a law passed by the parliament that said that Britain had the power to make and pass laws in the colonies. This started many protests in the colonies as well as in Britain which ultimately led to the repeal of the Stamp Act. -
Townshend Acts
Parliament wanted the governors of the colonies to stay loyal to the Crown, so they raised their salaries. These acts also served the purpose that Britain had the right to tax the colonies.
