Virginia Slave Codes
Virginia General Assembly, " Virginia Slave Codes", 1705. In "An act concerning Servants and Slaves," this provision states that all servants imported into the country whom were not Christian would be slaves. They would be treated as property and if disciplined and killed, the slave owner would be free of any charges. Slavery has now been a part of American culture for nearly 100 years.

Stono Rebellion- One of the largest slave revolts- S. Carolina
Corbett, et al. U.S. History, (Openstax, 2014)105. One of the largest slave revolts at this time. A large group of slaves riot, killing several whites before they are caught by militia in South Carolina. The remaining slaves not killed in battle were executed or sent to the West Indies.

The Negro Act 1740
Corbett,et al. U.S. History, (Openstax,2014)106. Following the Stono Rebellion, South Carolina enacted the Negro Act of 1740. This prohibited blacks from earning money, learning to write, gathering in groups, growing their own food, or any autonomous travel.

NY Conspiracy Trials- 13 blacks burned at stake, 4 whites hanged- suspected for starting 13 fires in the city
Corbett, et al. U.S. History, (Openstax, 2014)107. Thirteen fires were set throughout New York. The cities whites feared that the fires were part of a slave uprising and without proof, they spread rumors indicating a slave and Roman Catholic conspiracy. Authorities arrested 200 people. The New York Conspiracy trials led to the public burning alive of thirteen black slaves and the hanging of 4 whites. Others were executed and seventy of the slaves were sold to the West Indies. -
Lord Dunmore's Proclaimation
Dunmore, John, "Dunmore's Proclamation", 1775. British royal governor to Virginia, Lord Dunmore, issues Dunmore's Proclamation in 1775. This decree guarantees the freedom of any colony slave or indentured servant who joins the Loyalist forces to fight against the Patriots. 20,000 slaves answer the call to fight for the British.

Post Revolutionary War- 10-20,000 slaves freed by British
Corbett, et al. U.S. History, (Openstax, 2014)177. The Revolutionary War ended in 1783. Twenty thousand slaves from America had joined General Cornwallis against the Patriots. The release of 10-20,000 slaves after the war makes this event the largest emancipation of slaves so far. Many freed slaves relocated to Canada, England, and back to Africa.

Northwest Ordinance of 1787
UTA History Department, "Creating the Republic", 15. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 prohibited slavery above the Ohio River. This territory was later developed into what we know as Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana.

France abolishes slavery-Haiti is first independent black colony in America
Corbett, et al. U.S. History, (Openstax, 2014)220-221. In 1791, slave Toussaint L'Ouverture leads large slave revolt taking control of large portion of the French colony of Saint-Domingue, now known as Haiti. Sugar plantations are burned and several white planters are killed. In 1794, when the French outlawed slavery, he joined forces with France to defeat an attempted overtake of the island by Spain and England.

Naturalization Act- Defines American citizen to be a free white person, excludes nonwhites.
Corbett, et al. U.S. History, (Openstax, 2014)218. The 1790 Naturalization Act states that an American citizen is a free white individual with good character. It excluded Indians, Asians, and Africans. This further divided the nations racial tensions.

Act to Prohibit the Importation of Slaves

March 2, 1807, Thomas Jefferson signs the Act to Prohibit Importation of Slaves. Congress passes the law which goes into effect January 1, 1808, expressly prohibiting the importation of African slaves into America.
