Critical Rapid Growth Begins and Differentiation
Critical rapid growth- occurs until the age of 2 creating more than 100 trillion synapses, and growth of neural connections or synapses also known as differentiation. During Differentiation the brain also becomes complex and is able to function and develop over time. -
Neural Plate Develops
The neural plate develops and this is important because the neural plate plays a key role in the foundation of the nervous system. This neural plate eventually folds over and becomes the neural tube. -
Babies Brain Begins to Develop + Neurogenesis Begins
The process of the brain developing begins, along with the spinal cord, heart also begin development. Neurogenesis begins which is the birth of neurons. -
Neural Tube Closes, Babies brain Separates, Synapses Development
(6-7 weeks) The neural tube closes and the babies brain separates into the front, mid, and hind brain. The synapses begin to develop in the spinal cord, this helps the baby begin to have little movements. -
Mirgration of Neurons
(9 weeks after) Migration occurs – process of neurons move to the final and correct destination, after the neurons reach their final destination dendritic growth begins. Neurons are information processing cells that pass signal throughout the nervous system, and they are extremely important. After the neurons get to the their final destination, they begin to take on important roles some roles being storing memory, and interpreting sounds. -
Major Developments in the Babies Brain
Around 15-20 weeks after conception the babies cerebral cortex begins to develop. -
Developing Cerebellum and More Mature Brain
Due to the Cerebellum developing the baby begins to kicking, moving around and stretching. The baby can also begin to hear at the end of 2nd trimester, and the hypothalamus becomes more mature and the babies brain starts to look more developed with brain stem. -

Rapid Growth of Brain- Major Developments in Cerebellum
Rapid Growth - ( week 27- week 40) - The babies brain splits into the right brain and left brain, also at the 3rd trimester the baby begins to have the most movement due to the Cerebellum being very developed. This leads to the baby kicking, punching, stretching and moving around. -
Brain triples in weight
In the 3rd trimester the brain triples in weight. -
Functioning of Auditory Cortex, Visual Cortex, and Brocas Area Begin
All of these areas of the brain begin to develop, and this leads to the beginning of cognitive in development of the babies brain. -

Recognition Improves - Growth of Hippocampus
Hippocampus grows and this leads to better recognition/ memory -
Cerebellum triples in size
Cerebellum triples in size and this leads to development of motor skills. Visual areas of the cortex grow and this helps the sight of a baby become more clear and less dim. -
Brain doubles in size, and Frontal and Temporal lobes become Stronger
Synapses are formed at a faster rate in these years. Due to the frontal and temporal lobes become stronger in the 1st year ( from hearing everyone around them) the baby can begin to say their 1st words between 12-18 months after birth. -

Babies Language abilities get stronger + Myelination increase
Due to more synapses becoming connected there is a spike in the Childs ability to talk. In the 2nd year there is an increase of Myelination( help brain perform complex tasks) leads to self awareness developing. -
Pruning starts
Pruning is the process of eliminating all the extra and excess neurons and synapses in the Brain.This occurs from age 2 until 20s. -
