    The Dalai Lama was invited to attend a dance performance at the PLA headquarters, and junior advisors spread rumors that the invitation was a trap to kidnap or potentially assassinate their leader. To protect him, crowds surrounded the Norbulingka palace in a move that escalated into demonstrations with as many as 30,000 people.
