this is the celebration on the last day of the year. certain rituals they do determine good luck or bad luck for the new year. Polly was certain that everything would go as planned and it will bring her hope for the new year ahead. the first foot had to be a dark haired man or else they would have bad luck for the whole year. A red haired man came very drunk into the house first. This is important in the story because it is foreshadowing all the bad things that will happen in this year. -

Polly finds a letter from Jessie and she is concerned and upset with John because he has been with another women while he has been away. She doesn't know what to do and goes to the neighbor for support. This is an important part of the novel because she finally finds out some truth about John and he can't be getting away with his lies. This event leads to the death of Polly. -
John moves to Saskatoon

John told Polly that he bought her a house in Saskatoon. She packed all of her things and they went on their way to Saskatoon. John told her that they were going to stop in Blaine lake to tell Jessie the truth. He shot Polly in the head with a shot gun. This is an important part of the novel because this is showing us Johns true colors and he will go as far as taking an innocent life because of his lies and affairs. -
