The UN began its humanitarian relief effort in Somalia, which it called Operation Provide Relief -
Bush's Declaration
The UN was unable to deliver relief aid to Somalia because of the group al-Shabab, who was preventing relief aid delivery. President Bush proposed that US troops should be sent to Somalia. -
US Troops Sent to Somalia
The UN accepted Bush's offer; 25,000 US troops were then sent to Somalia. -
Addis Ababa Accords
The Addis Ababa Accords were signed. This was an agreement to try and end violence in Somalia, calling it Operation Provide Relief II -
Turn Over
The US officially handed over Operation Restore Hope to the UN. In the span of about a month, only 1,200 US troops remained in Somalia. -
Aidid
The US and the UN attacked targets in Mongadishu that were related to Mohamed Farrah Aidid, dictator of Somalia. -
Battle of Mogadish
US Army Task Force Ranger went in to try and take out Aidid. However, this led to a 17 hour battle killing 18 US soldiers and wounding 84. -
Removal
President Clinton declared that all US troops were to be removed by March
