Edward Jenner invents a smallpox vaccine
Edward Jenner created a vaccine cure to smallpox. This made history in the creation of medicines -
agriculture was invented.
Biotechnology in the Realm of HistoryPeople started to domesticate animals to produce food. The same was done wth plants -
Cotton is domesticated.
Cotton is crossbred. Many varieties of cotten with different qualities are made avaible. -
The first experimental corn hybrid is produced in a laboratory.
the first corn hybrid is produced in a laboratory. This was a start to developing the delicious corn varieties we eat. -
The Cancer Causing Virus is discovered.
Rous discovers tne first cancer causing virus. This was important to help find a cure to cancer. -
Penicillin is produced.
An antibiotic medicone peniccillin is produced in mass microbes for the first time. This was for delivery to Allied troops in WW2 -
Method for producing monoclonal antibodies developed by Köhler and César Milstein.

Patented Organisms are allowed to happen.
The Exxon oil company developed a patented organism to creat oil eating microbes. These useful oil eating microbes were used to clean up the oil spills in the ocean that destroyed the aquatic life. This was around the similar time the exxon valdez crashed and spilled gallons of oil into the ocean around alaska.
I found this interesting because it is an innovative way to clean up the waste we have in our ocean and save the species in the ocean from dying off. -
Interferon
Inteferon is a cancer curing solution produced through biotech. The solution consists of interferon proteins which are manufactured using biotech. These useful proteins upon entering the body modulate the body's responses to many harmful diseases including cancer.
I found this interesting because it is basically using human engineered proteins to cure a disease. If we made more drugs like this. it would make a big difference. -
1992: FDA approves bovine somatotropin (BST) for increased milk production in dairy cows.
This helped farmers produced more milk and make more profit. This helped the dairy industry do better. -
The first breast cancer gene is discovered.
biotech historyThe first breast cancer gene was discovered this year. The breast cancer gene discovery was important to creat more cures -
The first genetically engineered crop is commercialized.
The first genetic engineered crop is avaible for commercial production. This was useful to creat more genetically engineered foods. -
A gene associated with Parkinson’s disease is discovered.
Parkinsons is a very serious disease that leaves people paralyzed. The discovery of the gene was greatly important. -
A sheep named Dolly in Scotland becomes the first animal cloned from an adult cell.
A sheep is cloned. This was the first cloning of an animal. -
Kenya field-tests its first biotech crop, virus-resistant sweet potato
Many sweet potatoes were infected with viruses. The genetically engineered sweet potato made it easier to get sweet potatoes uninfected. -

Gene targeted drug is approved for the first time. This drug helps people with lukemia. -
Rice becomes the first crop to have its genome decoded.
Rice is one of the most inportant crops in the world. Having the genome of a mass produced crop can help develope genetic engineered rice. -
