300 BCE
Aristotle
Aristotle explains that life arose from non-living materials because it contained "vital heat". -
Francesco Redi - Spontaneous generation
Francesco Redi designed a scientific experiment to test the spontaneous creation of maggots. This was considered one of the first experiments that proved the theory wrong. -
John Needham - spontaneous generation
John Needham performed an experiment that showed evidence for the concept of spontaneous generation in which he boiled broth infused with plant or animal matter, he argued that the new microbes must have arisen spontaneously. -
Spallanzani - spontaneous generation
In Lazzaro Spallanzani's Experiment, he proved microorganisms could be killed by boiling. -
Pasteur - spontaneous generation
Louis Pasteur found that the broth did not have bacteria growth, thus proving that there was in fact nothing in the air that caused spontaneous generation, disproving the theory. -

Hermann Richter - Panspermia
Hermann Richter put forward the idea that life has always existed in the universe. In this theory, life has existed and will exist for all eternity, and so there is no need for an explanation of its origin. -

Oparin-Haldane
The Oparin-Haldane hypothesis suggests that life arose gradually from inorganic molecules, with “building blocks” like amino acids forming first and then combining to make complex polymers. -

Miller - Urey 1953
Miller and Urey combined warm water with water vapour, methane, ammonia and molecular hydrogen. Thus experiment successfully produced molecules from inorganic components thought to have been present on the prebiotic earth -
Francis Crick
He said that RNA must have been the first genetic molecule, also suggesting that RNA, besides acting as a template, might also act as an enzyme and, in so doing, catalyze its own self-replication. -

Nick Lane
“There are multiple competing theories as to where and how life started. Underwater hydrothermal vents are among most promising locations for life’s beginnings – our findings now add weight to that theory with solid experimental evidence,” -
