First the people were calling for moderation, but the pushed for abstinence. 18th Amendment was passed and outlawed all alcohol, after a while they realized it wasn't working, and passed the 21st Amendment which put a drinking age. Prohibition created Organized Crime and might have been a big reason we went into the Great Depression.

    Harding wanted less support for foreign policy and more emphasis on peacetime production and prosperity in America. Under Harding we didn't join the League of Nation's, he enacted high tariffs, lowered taxes, and put a restriction on immigration.

    Warren Harding was appointing his friends to spots in office. One of his friends who was the Secretary of the Interior was leasing land with large amounts of oil to two of his business friends. This scandal is considered one of the worst in scandals in US history.

    The defending attorney in the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. He was one of the best orators at the time. He cross examined his opponent Bryan, and began to point out contradictions, and how he was an expert on the Bible. Darrow lost and Scopes was convicted of teaching Evolution, but his fine $1.

    Scopes Monkey Trial
    John Scopes was a biology teacher in Tennessee. He was arrested in 1925 for teaching the Theory of Evolution. It was a highly publicized trial, due to the new invention of the radio, many people all over the radio were listening to the trial, this was the first trial to be broadcasted. Scopes was ultimately convicted but his penalty was a fine of $1.

    The Prosecutor in the Scopes Monkey Trial. He was a self proclaimed expert on the Bible. The attorney was also one of the best orators of his time. Which helped drive up the publicity for the case. William won the case, because it was a case to determine if Scopes taught Evolution not whether or not it was right of him to do it.

    First man to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by himself. He flew nonstop from New York City, New York all the way to Paris France. He flew the trip in his plane, The Spirit of St. Louis.

    Nicknamed , "Black Tuesday" due to the loss of billions of dollars of money due to falling stock prices at the New York Stock Exchange. Big business tried to buy stocks to keep the prices up, but they couldn't spend enough to keep them from falling. Resulted from over speculation in the stock market. Millions of banks closed because they invested money they didn't have.

    The deepest, longest lasting, economic downturn in the history of the US. Began soon after the Stock Market Crash. Many business went bankrupt, leaving employees without jobs, or money. People were living in the street. People were selling their kids because they needed money and couldn't afford to feed them.

    FDR created the Federal Reserve in order to moderate the market. It is used to pump money into the economy when it's needed. Part of the reason that the Great Depression happened, was because bank notes weren't the same in every state which led to drop offs in economy and had great fluctuation in the economy. The federal reserve keeps the highs in the economy from getting too high and the lows from getting to low, so that businesses can plan

    Area in the midwest where a combination of drought and poor farming practices ruined the land. Nothing was holding the loose dirt down so it blew everywhere and created huge dust storms. Many people were forced to move and abandon the land that they felt was turning on them.

He managed, with the help of his "Brain Trust" to pull the United States out of The Great Depression. He is the only president to be elected for more than two terms, he was elected 4 times.

    A government agency that was in charge of the task of modernizing the Tennessee economy. When nobody had money to buy the produce and things that were coming out of Tennessee the people of the state suffered a very hard economic downturn. They would use electricity and federal experts to modernize the state economy.

    The plan the Franklin D Roosevelt had that was going to bring America out of The Great Depression. The New Deal consisted of many much different Acts and Laws that created jobs, and regulated business in a way that would help build up the economy. The New Deal is what got Roosevelt elected to office three of his four times. The fourth time was because people had more to worry about, WW2, than a presidential election.

    These were the ideas that inspired the New Deal. Roosevelt created The New Deal based off of these principles. Rosevelt wanted to give relief to the people, relieve them off all of their financial trouble, or as much as possible. He then would would help the US recover the money it lost, by getting money back in circulation instead of people just piling it up. He then would pass long terms laws to ensure that something like this would never happen again.

    A corporation that was created by the government. They insured bank deposits so that people wouldn't lose their savings in the event of a bank failure. This was part of the Reform section of his plan.

    The twenty first amendment was passed to repeal the eighteenth amendment. It made alcohol legal again , but instituted a legal drinking age of 21. This is the only amendment to repeal another.

They gave people honest information about the stocks, and made clear rules for honest trading. They are stil around tody doing the same things they were doing then.

    A government administration that looks out for your welfare. Started by FDR and one of his laws. Administer Social Security, social insurance program like retirement, disability, and survivor's benefits. The Administration is still around today.

    The Red Scare was the name given to the time period where events happened due to Americas growing fear of Communists after World War 1. If you were suspected of being a "communist" you were arrested and taken to prison and wouldn't be released unless you gave up other communists. If you gave up other communists, even if they weren't you are a communists. In court trials if you claimed you weren't a communist the argument they made was, "thats what a communist would say."
