The war united Russia. A negative factor was that as men went to war, there was nobody to work factories and farms. The Industry and Agriculture fell apart, so did the economy. There was food shortage as well causing riots and uprising of angry civilians. Riots broke out as a result of starvation. As the number of death increased, so did the level of discontent.

There was already tension between European countries and the United States before World War I. In between WWI and WWII, there were a few factors that sparked the second World War.

The Red Army invaded Russia causing the country to turn into a Soviet Republic. The Red Army consisted of peasants and workers.

After Lenin's death, his delegates made a constitution. It set up an elected legislature (Supreme Soviet), gave citizens over 18 rights to vote. Power, resources, & means of production belonged to peasants.

This plan was set to build heavy industry, improve transportation, and increase agriculture. It did leave a positive effect on Russia. These 3 areas did improve. Feeding the population of the Soviet Union was still a major issue.

Many women were working in medicine, engineering, or the sciences. Women contributed to economic growth. They worked in factories, construction, and on collectives.

Stalin wanted to stop Hitler and his power. -
WIth the ideas of Marx, atheism became an official state policy. The party seized religious property and converted churches into offices and museums. Many priests and religious leaders were killed or died in prison camps. Other religions were prosecuted as well. Communists replaced religion with their own ideology.

Stalin turned the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state. There is 1 party dictatorship that attempts to regulate every ascpect of the lives of its citizens. The Communist party used secret police, terror, purges, and censorship.

Stalin feared of rival parties plotting against him. He set out to kill wealthy peasants. Stalin & his secret police cracked down on party activists. Many party members were sent to forced-labor camps. The victims were most of the nation's military officers. This loss affected when Germany invaded.

This war started in 1939 and ended in 1945. Countries involved were Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, Australia, Canada, India, S. Africa, New Zealand, Jamaica, British, etc. It was one of the bloodiest wars in history and left millions dead.

Russia met up with Germany during this invasion because Germany was invading at the same time. They surrendered and handed over Polish prisoners. Russian ended with 3/5 of Poland and 13 million of its people. -
Russia lost a lot of military power. Germany took advantage and invaded Russia.
