How did the battle begin?
At almost 130 metres high (over 400 feet), the ridge gave an excellent view over the surrounding area and made an impregnable fortress for any army which held it. The Germans captured it early in the war in 1914. It would take 3 years before Canada would succeed in taking it back. -
