Birth and Childhood
Ni hao! My name is Bao-Zhi Hwang. I am the only child (male) of 2 parents and I was born in Shanghai, China. My family wasn't the wealthiest, but we weren't poor either. However, my country is undergoing a small war and my parents don't want me to be surrounded by that and the amount of criminals in our country as well. They feel it's unsafe to live in our country now, so we will hopefully be leaving it as soon as we can. -
Coming to America
I didn't know what to think, or where to look because everything was just so... different. My parents thought the same, I'm pretty sure. We arrived to this place called Angel Island which is located in California. I still can't believe I'm finally in the states! Everything is astonishing to my eyes, and it will surely take a while for me to process this. I'm so glad we've come here, and that we are away from our country filled with bad energy and unhealthy fighting. -
Process of Angel Island
This long, tiresome line was unbelievable. My parents and I had to wait in line for a day, and some of this day as well to go through the process, but we were attented to today. What they did was check if we had an illness, we also had to sign our names, go through physical examinations and wait to be interrogated. After that, we were able to embark on our journey in this incredible country. -
My Life in America
The past 6 years have been great for me. I've improved on my English drastically, and found a steady job working on the railroads. My parents have retired already from their jobs, because they've now come of age. I live in a beautiful home in the city of San Francisco, and I'm not too far from where my parents live so I can always keep an eye on them. The states have brought me great happiness, and I don't plan on going back to my native homeland anytime soon. -
Brutal Racism
As great as it is living in San Francisco, I'm always bombarded with horrible comments about my race. Constantly I hear people saying hateful things behind my back, and when I eat at a restaurant, they do not treat me with respect, but they do so for others. Also, my work does not give me the same wages as Americans and I find it very unjust. I hope one day this country will be equal, and all discrimination will dissapear. -
A Newly Married Man
Just when life was great, it became better when I met a beautiful Chinese woman that is absolutely perfect for me. We met in 1902 and have been dating for 3 years. One night, I proposed to her and she accepted; truthfully, i think it was the best day of my life. Now on this day, we are getting married with our traditional Chinese heritage mixed into it.
